7/2 at LCB – Fix sexism in literature!
An attempt to an international approach

During this evening we want to present the Fixdit Manifesto ‘Optimistic anger’ and discuss genderbias and -inequality against its historical backdrop and in an international context. Who were our female predecessors and why were they not canonised? Which female authors from all over the world influences our work? And in which genres did they (and do we) excell? Is there such a thing as female literature? And above all: what can we, writers, readers and booksellers, do to amplify these female voices? A multi-voiced debate on literary polyphony.

An interactive evening with performances and debate.

22/2 at LCB – FixDit Vooo-event – 17-18u

digitaal evenement, vooral voor schrijvers (internationaal),
maar ook open voor publiek uit B en Nl

Over the last years, the female writers’ collective Fixdit has been trying to ‘fix’ gender-inequality and sexism in the literary world. Starting from our shared knowledge, we tried to map the gender gap and figure out how we could ‘fix’ the ongoing underrepresentation of writing women by spotlighting female authors from the past and present in schools, bookshops and the media. We wrote articles, made podcasts and published a manifesto: Optimistic Anger.

In ’24 we are ready for the next step: internationalisation. We want to widen our view and broaden our connections. During this virtual meet-up with female colleagues from all over the world, we want to start mapping literary gender issues globally. Based on the experiences that all of you bring to the table, we want to explore what an international version of our Manifesto could look like and strengthen links and alliances between female writers worldwide, so that we can share knowledge and support each other’s work — setting up a community of female writers to amplify the polyphony of our voices.

Note: this event is open to the general public. Readers, booksellers, publishers and programmers who support the work of female writers or are interested in it are very welcome to join the debate.

26/2 at LCB – Unheard voices and perspectives

Literature speaks all too often with a only male voice.  The middleclass white heterosexual male perspective still dominates novels, essays and plays and sets the standard of what good and Grand literature is. Pupils in schools, students and ordinary readers thus miss out on seeing the largest part of the world and recognizing other experiences. In a time when Europe swings to the right and culture is framed more and more as an identity tool, we feel the need for hearing this diversity of voices more than ever. During this evening we explore alternative perspectives and have a closer look at the literature of these too often unheard voices. Yesterday and today, in Europe and worldwide.

An interactive evening with performances and debate.
